Chapter 6
The rumble grew less dense. Human yells rose above the thunder: Mean Man and his three grown sons. I could hear them again.
And then I could hear only individual hoofbeats. The horses were leaving. And so were the men. Their yells were growing more numerous, but farther away. They mustnât have seen me here, covered in mud.
Cautiously, I loosened my grip and raised my head to watch the last three mustangs rush out of the small corral.
Weâd done it!
I leapt to my feet â and sagged down to my knees as my side erupted in pain. Gingerly, I put my hand beneath my muddy jacket to feel my shirt, wet and sticking to my side where the unshod hoof had raked against my ribs. Ow!
But enough about my injuries. I had to see what was happening with the mustangs.
I staggered back through the two smaller corrals. Where was Twilight? Quickly I zoned into her.
Oh, the lovely, glorious freedom! Not just from my beloved Twilight, but from all the freed mustangs as they raced along the dirt road, farther from civilization with every stride. She had shown the escaping mustangs the gate and now was leading them to safety. Already, they were very close to being out of range.
A totally unwelcome thought whispered to me â Twilight would come back, wouldnât she? Despite the fact that she felt so excited, racing with the huge herd, sheâd still want to return to me, right? Despite the stroke of the wind and the stretch of her muscles and the feeling of belonging that was so heady? Despite galloping with horses that she understood, horses who were wild and smart and as tough as old boots, just like she was.
I know it totally showed Twilight my insecurities, but I couldnât stop myself from asking, Come home?
No worries. And then she was too far away.
So... did that mean she was coming home? Or that I shouldnât worry because sheâd never forget me? That sheâd be safe and happy living with the mustangs again?
Okay, I had to stop thinking like this. And besides, I had to get out of here safely myself.
I reached the main mustang corral, now wonderfully empty, and hurried to the gate, hanging at an angle. Some of the mustangs must have bumped the gate as they rushed through the narrow opening, breaking it. Repairs were needed before it would hold any more creatures against their will, something that made me feel happy â as long as the poor mustangs were okay.
I looked around the ranch yard. Had they all escaped? Were they all on their way back to the wild? It appeared so. A warm glow started in my heart.
Rusty?
Here! And he was, galloping in through the big ranch gates. I waved to him so heâd see me by the corral, and he ran even faster. A moment later, he skidded to a stop, sending a spray of mud around me. Not that I could get any dirtier. I probably looked like some long extinct swamp creature.
